There are 31 different types of hawks that live in the United States. Hawks are birds of prey that belong to the same family of eagles and kites known as the Accipitridae family of birds. They are closely related to falcons, osprey and vultures.
Hawks have sharp talons, powerful curved beaks and keen eyesight. Some commonly known hawk species include the sharp-shinned hawk, Cooper’s hawk, Northern goshawk and the red-tailed hawk.
Hawks are swift and agile in flight and can soar or glide for long periods of time. They vary greatly in size according to species, and females are generally stronger and larger than males.
