How many different varieties of squash are there?

More than 50 types of squash are available in the United Sates. These squash varieties may be divided into two categories: summer squash and winter squash.

Types of summer squash include yellow zucchini, crookneck squash and Cocozella Di Napoli. Yellow zucchini is used and tastes just like classic green zucchini. Crookneck squash has a mild flavor and a bright yellow or pale green skin. Cocozella Di Napoli is a type of Italian heirloom zucchini.

Varieties of winter squash include acorn, butternut and kabocha squash. Acorn squash have a sweet and tender flesh. Butternut squash has thick flesh and is very versatile. The flesh of kabocha squash is sweet with a mild nutty flavor.
