How many eggs does a garter snake lay?

Unlike most other snakes, the garter snake doesn't lay eggs. It gives birth to live young. Over 50 can be born at one time, measuring in length from 5 to 9 inches.

The mating period of garter snakes is from late March to early May. Garter snakes hibernate in winter, using large rocks or burrows of other mammals as cover. Lacking the climbing skills of other snakes, garter snakes spend their time on the ground or in shrubs and other plants. Birds, raccoons, bullfrogs and other snakes are common predators of the garter snake. When attacked, the garter snake releases a foul odor and is capable of biting.
