How many games are in an NHL regular season?

As of the 2013-14 season, each of the 30 National Hockey League (NHL) teams plays 82 games during the regular season. Teams have played an 82-game schedule since the 1995-96 season, when it was reduced from 84.

Each team plays 41 home and 41 away games, with a total of 1,230 NHL games taking place each season. The teams are split into Eastern and Western Conferences of 16 and 14 teams. In the standings, teams are awarded two points for a win, none for a loss and one for an overtime loss. The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs and are seeded one through eight, with the two conference champions playing for the Stanley Cup.
