According to Confetti, three godparents are acceptable per child in the Christian religion. Traditionally, a girl has one godfather and two godmothers, while a boy has two godfathers and one godmother. People outside the Christian religion can name any number of godparents for their children.
The Roman Catholic Church says that there are certain requirements that have to be met in order for a person to become a godparent. Godparents have to be at least 16 years of age and appointed by a priest, guardian or the parents of the child. The godparents cannot be the biological mother or father of the child.
