How many gospels are there in the Bible?

There are four recognised gospels in the New Testament Canon. They include the first four books of the New Testament: Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. The gospels are accounts of the life of Jesus Christ.
Luke, in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 1 vs. 1-4, says that many works were written about the life of Jesus. Only four of those books were canonized as gospels by the Council when they voted in the third century A.D. The vote was close, so the methods and opinions have been debated ever since. The discovery of formerly unknown ancient texts during the 20th century fueled the debate over whether the correct decisions were made by the council.
