How many books are in the Bible?

The number of books in the Bible depends upon the religion. Different religious groups include and exclude different books. Additionally, some use alternative titles or categorise the books in different ways.

The Hebrew Bible comprises 24 books, the Protestant Bible 39 books and the Catholic Bible 46 books. Whilst each of these religions use the books of the Old Testament, there are some major differences between the versions used by Jews and Christians. The New Testament is not found in Jewish Bibles, however, is used by Catholics and Protestants. The "extra" books found in the Catholic Bible are referred to as the Apocryphal books.
