Long-haul truck drivers can work no more than 60 hours in seven days or 70 hours in eight days, says the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. They cannot work for more than 14 consecutive hours, and they must have a break of at least 10 hours between work periods.

Long-haul truck drivers must break for at least 34 hours after working for seven or eight days before they can start a new run. They use a logbook to keep track of their hours, and the work frequently includes nights, weekends and holidays. Because they are away from home much of the time, the job amounts to a lifestyle choice, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
