How many hours per week can a 17-year-old work in California?

Seventeen-year-olds can work up to 48 hours per week in the state of California, according to the State of California Department of Industrial Relations. The number of hours they can work per day depends on whether school is in session.

The California Department of Industrial Relations states that when a minor is in school, he may work no more than four hours on a school day. On a day in which there is no school or when school is out of session, the minor may work eight hours. If the minor is enrolled in a Work Experience Education program approved by the California Department of Education, the state allows them to work up to eight hours on a school day.
