How many kinds of pumpkins are there?

There are more than 30 varieties of pumpkins, ranging from small, intermediate, large and jumbo. Contrary to popular belief, not all pumpkins are orange; many are green, white and brown.

All varieties of pumpkins are part of the gourd family of vegetables, which include cantaloupe, honeydew melon, zucchini and squash. They grow on six continents, though they are native to Mexico and Central America. Pumpkin varieties fall into different sizes, such as the popular baby bear variety, which is no more than 3 pounds, and the jumbo varieties that get up to 100 pounds or more. The heaviest pumpkin weighed 1,810 pounds and was grown in Stillwater, Minnesota.
