There are 11,842 lakes in Minnesota. Of the 87 counties in the state, only four have no natural lakes.
The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota Indian word "Mnisota," which means " clear blue water." The state has 11,842 lakes that are larger than 10 acres, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Red Lake in Beltrami County is the largest lake within the borders of Minnesota at 288,800 acres. Lake Saganaga in Cook County is the deepest natural lake at 240 feet and the deepest inland lake is Portsmouth Mine Pit within Crosby city limits at 450 feet and rising. Four counties in the state of Minnesota do not feature any natural lakes: Mower, Olmsted, Pipestone and Rock.
