An elephant has four legs. It walks on all fours, and it also has a long trunk with finger-like elements that it can use to grab things.
The African elephant is a large mammal. The average elephant weighs anywhere from 5,000 to 14,000 pounds (2,268 to 6,350 kilograms). Its height at the shoulder is 8.2 to 13 feet (2.5 to 4 meters).
Elephants use their four legs to travel great distances looking for food. They sleep very little and need large amounts of food to sustain their huge bodies.
The elephant's trunk is a long nose, but also functions somewhat like an arm or hand. The trunk is made up of approximately 100,000 different muscles.
