According to Wildlife Journal Junior, a moth is an insect, so it has six jointed legs. Its body has three parts: a head, thorax and an abdomen. All its legs are located on the thorax.
Other features of moths include wide and feathery antennae and exoskeltons, or hard outer shells. Moths have compound eyes with hundreds of lenses. When perching, their four scaly wings, which emerge from the thorax, fold up against their bodies. Live Science indicates that moths come in a wide range of sizes. While some are less than an inch long, Asia's Atlas moth has a wingspan of about a foot.
