The loonie is Canada's $1 coin, and there are 25 loonies in a full roll. The coin gets its name from the loon, the bird that appears on its reverse side. It was designed in 1987 by artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael and was created to replace the $1 bill.

The loonie is considered a good-luck charm with Canada’s hockey and curling teams. In 2002, a loonie was buried under center ice to bring good luck during the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. In 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint created the first lucky loonie to bring luck to Canadian athletes during the Olympic Winter Games in Athens.
