A standard track and field oval for high school, collegiate and professional events measures 400 meters in length. This generally includes two straights of 84.39 meters each and two semicircle bends of 115.61 meters each.
Some events on the oval include the 100-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,600-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter individual runs and relays, with the field inside the oval often hosting the shot put, discus, pole vault and other events. The centerpiece of the Summer Olympic Games since 1896, track and field is regulated in the United States by the Athletics Congress and by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) in international competition. Both have agreed to use metric measurements.
