The miles per gallon rating of a Ford Explorer depends upon where the vehicle is driven, the type of engine and the kind of fuel used. A 2014 Explorer with front-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine averages 20 miles per gallon during city driving but 28 mpg on the highway.
A similar Explorer with a six-cylinder engine gets 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. Using gasoline, an all-wheel-drive, six-cylinder Explorer averages 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the open road. However, if that vehicle runs on E85, which is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, the miles per gallon ratings are 12 city and 17 highway.
