While the exact number of Muslims in the United States is not known, estimates stand at somewhere between 2 million and 7 million people. If the highest estimate is used, that would mean that Muslims make up approximately 2 percent of the U.S. population.
The population of Muslims in the U.S. will more than double during the next 20 years, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. This will be due largely to immigration and an increase in birth rate. Presently, immigrants account for about 60 percent of Muslims in the U.S., and of those, about 70 percent are citizens. Of native-born Muslims, about 60 percent are African-Americans.
