The Globe Theater can fit 1,500 people inside of it and another 1,500 on the grounds for a total capacity of 3,000 people for a performance. Often called the "Wooden O," the Globe measured 100 feet in diameter.
The Globe was built in the style of an amphitheater. Plays were typically performed in the afternoon because of the lack of artificial lighting. At the Globe, plays were done in the late spring and summer months to take advantage of the weather. The Globe was the home theater for the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later called the King's Men, of whom William Shakespeare was a part. The roof of the original Globe caught fire in 1613 from a cannon blast during the play "Henry VIII."
