During the Battle of Fort Washington, 84 British soldiers and 59 colonial soldiers died. Another 374 British soldiers and 96 colonial soldiers were wounded. The British captured 2,837 colonial soldiers, while the colonial soldiers captured none.

The battle took place on Nov. 16, 1776, on the island of Manhattan in New York City. Hessian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen attacked the garrison at Fort Washington that morning with 8,000 British and Hessian troops at his disposal. The garrison put up stiff resistance, but the enemy forces overwhelmed the colonials by the afternoon. The traitor William Demont, a former officer in the colonial army, aided the victory with intelligence he gave to the British about the fort.
