How many people died in the Battle of Gettysburg?

Approximately 51,000 people died in the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle is the largest ever fought on American soil with 165,000 soldiers fighting over the three days that the fight lasted.

There were around 23,000 Union soldiers and 28,000 Confederate soldiers who fell as casualties in July of 1863. The Confederates were led by General Lee, and the Union by General Meade. The battle left the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, full of wounded soldiers. The entire town was filled with makeshift hospital areas and recovery areas for those who were left behind when the troops moved on to their next battle. Cleanup and recovery for the town took several years.
