How many plates are there?

According to the Etiquette Scholar, there are 12 standardized plate types in use as of 2014. Some of these plates are used for daily meals while others are reserved for special occasions. Most dinnerware sets don't include all 12 types.

The 12 types of plates include the service plate, dinner plate, luncheon plate, round salad plate, crescent salad plate and fish plate as well as dessert plate, cheese plate, tea plate, fruit plate, bread plate and fruit saucer. The most common plates found in dinnerware sets for everyday use include the dinner plate, the salad plate and the dessert plate although combinations do vary by brand and by model.
