How many postal codes are there in Canada?

There were a total of 855,815 postal codes in Canada, as of Sept. 2014. This is an increase from 845,990 postal codes in Jan. 2014.

The structure of the Canadian postal code is alphanumeric. It has an edit mask of ANA NAN, where A represents a letter and N represents a number. The first three digits represent the Forward Sortation Area. The last three digits represent the Local Delivery Unit. The first digit of the FSA is the identifier for 18 major geographic areas, provinces or districts. The LDU can get as specific as identifying a single city block or a specific rural community.
