According to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Election Assistance Commission, approximately 190,669,639 Americans were registered to vote in the 2014 mid-term elections. That figure is roughly 85.7 percent of the U.S. population of voting age.
Although laws governing voter eligibility are established in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, the processes and requirements of voter registration varies from state to state. Registration rates vary within different racial, political and socioeconomic demographics. Furthermore, only a portion of registered voters participate on Election Day. Despite the large number of registered voters, 2014 saw the lowest voter turnout since World War II.
