There were 12 full moons during the 2014 calendar year. According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the first full moon of 2014 occurred on January 16. The 12th and final full moon of 2014 occurred on December 6.
A full moon occurs when 100 percent of the Moon's hemisphere that faces Earth is visible from Earth. The phenomenon happens, on average, every 29.53 days. Therefore, every calendar year contains either 12 or 13 full moons. Even during a full moon, only half of the moon is visible from Earth since its other hemisphere is always pointed away from Earth. 2014's lunar calendar was somewhat unique in that a new moon, in which none of the Moon is visible from Earth, occurred on New Year's Day.
