As of 2014, there are around 29,000 rhinos left in the wild, according to statistics provided by Save The Rhino. This number is down from 70,000 rhinos in 1970 and 500,000 rhinos in the early 20th century. The majority of these rhinos are of the Southern white rhino breed.
Many species of rhino, such as the Javan and Sumatran rhinos, are critically endangered. There are only 35 to 45 Javan rhinos left in the wild, all of which are members of a single population in Ujung Kulon National Park. Sumatran rhinos are faring slightly better, with 100 left in the wild and efforts to increase the population through captive breeding.
