How many segments does a leech have?

Leeches have 32 segments. The segments are not divided internally, allowing the leech to store large amounts of blood. Classified as annelids, leeches are related to earthworms.

A leech has both male and female reproductive organs. They are able to spin a cocoon to protect fertilized eggs called embryos. Newly hatched leeches are identical to adult leeches.

Suckers at each end of the leech's body allow it to move and to attach to a host. Several sensory organs help leeches detect feeding opportunities. Most leeches are technically not a parasite because they suck blood and then remove themselves from the host.
