Of the 100 senators in Congress, roughly one-third, or 33, are elected every two years to six-year terms. Elections are held in November, and there is no limit on the number of times an individual may serve on the Senate.
The Senate and the 435-member House of Representatives combine to form the U.S. Congress, the legislative branch of the government responsible for making laws. While the number of House members varies from state to state and is based on population, there is always a fixed number of two Senators in each of the 50 states, regardless of the size of each state.
