Henry Hudson sailed three ships during his career as captain. They were not owned by him; he sailed them as commander of expeditions for shipping companies.

Henry Hudson made four expeditions in search of a northern passage to Asia. On his first two expeditions, he commanded the Hopewell. Both expeditions had to return to England after encountering ice packs. On his third expedition, he sailed the Half Moon for the Dutch. On his final expedition, Henry Hudson commanded the Discovery for British companies and private sponsors. During this final expedition, he discovered what is now known as the Hudson Strait and Hudson Bay.
