The official baseballs used in Major League Baseball have 108 double stitches as of 2014. Each baseball is hand-stitched and held together with red yarn or string.
The modern baseball has an inner core of yarn that is wound tightly around a small ball of cork or rubber. Two strips of white cowhide are stitched together with the red yarn. Once stitching is complete, the ball should weigh between 5 and 5 1/4 ounces and measure between 9 and 9 1/4 inches in circumference. Rawlings has been the exclusive manufacturer of the official baseballs for Major League Baseball since 1977. Prior to this, official baseballs were made by Spalding.
