To run one mile, complete four full laps, plus a further 9.34 meters. The extra length is because the standard running track size is only 400 meters. On a 400 meter track the start line is 9.34 meters further back. This assumes running on the inside lane.
Standard track sizes for international competitions are set by the International Association of Athletics Federation. In 1976, most imperial running distances were abolished. In international competitions, the 1 mile race has been superseded by the 1500 meters. Previously, track lengths were 440 yards, and four full laps covered the 1 mile distance of 1760 yards.
