Over the course of his lifetime, Mohandas "Mahatma" Gandhi was arrested four times. His first arrest was in 1922 in South Africa, and this was followed by subsequent arrests in 1930, 1933 and 1942 in India.

Gandhi was arrested for various reasons ranging from disobeying authorities to urging public resistance of the British Empire. Among his punishments for these perceived crimes, Gandhi spent a total of seven years in prison spread out among the separate sentences he received in conjunction for his four arrests. Despite having a criminal record, Mohandas Gandhi is widely viewed as a hero among people in India for his actions.
