How did Gandhi die?

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated with a pistol by Nathuram Godse. On January 30, 1948, Godse emerged from a crowd admiring Gandhi to shoot him three times at close range.

The radical used a Beretta automatic pistol and attempted to commit suicide shortly after but was captured by bystanders before he could kill himself. Godse was a member of a fanatic group that opposed Gandhi's teachings of peace and tolerance throughout India. On the evening that Gandhi was shot, he was on his way to a prayer meeting with one of his great nieces at the Birla House in New Delhi.
