According to the U.S. Geological Society, the Kilauea volcano erupted approximately 63 times between 1750 and 1982 and has been continuously erupting since January 3, 1983. The Kilauea volcano is one of the most active in the world and has been responsible for the destruction of over 200 homes.

During the constant eruption period, the lava flowing into the ocean has changed the coastline of the island on which Kilauea is found. The current ongoing eruption is named Pu'u'O'o. According to local Hawaiian legend, the center crater of the volcano is the home of fire goddess Pele. This central crater is over 8 miles wide and holds a molten lava lake that is 740 feet deep.
