It takes about 6 percent of a tree to make a ream of paper. One ream of paper contains 500 sheets. Over 16 reams of copy paper — 8,333 sheets is manufactured from one tree.
The exact amount of paper produced varies by size and type of tree. Pine trees are the most common source of paper. The type of wood used also depends upon the paper product. It takes about 24 trees to make a metric ton of plain white copy paper but only 12 trees for the same amount of newsprint. A metric ton is equal to 1,000 kilograms or 2,205 pounds.
