How many types of strawberries are there?

The USDA Germplasm Resource Information Network lists 103 species and subspecies of strawberry plants. Type is not a proper term to be used in plant classification.

Species is a scientific term and many growers and gardeners also refer to strawberry varieties. There can be multiple varieties within one species classification. New varieties of strawberries are regularly produced by cross-pollinating plants with the intention to bring out certain desirable traits. The USDA offers many lists of which strawberry varieties grow well in which geographical area, as well as when each variety produces fruit. Typical varieties are sorted into June-bearing, Ever-bearing and Day-neutral categories.
