The common minimum time to gain the education required of a registered nurse is two to three years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. An RN only needs to complete an approved nursing diploma or an associate degree of nursing to meet typical state registration requirements.

Some nurses complete a bachelor degree of nursing to enhance the breadth and depth of career options, according to the BLS. A BSN degree usually takes four years. Supervised clinical experiences are a common component of a nursing program. The BLS further notes that RNs must complete the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs.
