What was Maryland's religion in the 1600s?

Colonial Maryland was primarily settled by Puritan and Catholic followers, who were encouraged to settle there by leaders in England. The two groups were encouraged to live together in the same area, although precautions were made to try to prevent friction between the Puritan majority and Catholic minority.

In 1649, the Maryland Governor William Stone established the Toleration Act to ensure religious liberties and justice for those who believed in Jesus Christ. This act was repealed five years later, after Puritans took over the colony's leadership. By 1692, the Anglican Church had become the official religion of the colony, and public display by any other sects was forbidden.
