How is cubic capacity figured?

The cubic capacity, or cc, of an engine is figured by multiplying 0.7854 by the cylinder bore squared times the crankshaft stroke times the number of cylinders, according to Burton Power. The cylinder bore is the diameter of the cylinder, while the crankshaft stroke is the distance the cylinder travels.

For example, one engine has four cylinders each with a bore of 8.1 centimeters with a stroke of 7.76 centimeters. The formula is 0.7854 times 8.1 times 8.1 times 7.76 times 4. This produces a product of 1,599.5 cc. The volume of cylinders is measured with special burettes filled with paraffin.
