In order to solve a linear equation, the variable must be isolated. While there are many ways for this to be accomplished, one thing remains the same in order to correctly solve it - maintain the balance. To maintain the balance of the equation, what is done to one side must be done to the other.

  1. Combine the like terms

    The terms x and 5x should be added together. Add 2 + 6. The answer will be 6x + 8 = 0.

  2. Subtract eight from both sides of the equation

In order to keep the balance, eight must be subtracted from both sides of the equation. The answer will be 6x = -8.

  3. Divide both sides by six

In order to finally isolate the variable x, both sides are divided by six. The answer is x = -8/6.

  4. Reduce the improper fraction to the lowest terms

By reducing the fraction, the answer will be x = -4/3, or minus 1 1/3.
