How do you solve one-step equations?

To solve one-step equations, perform the correct mathematical operation to get the variable by itself, and perform the same operation on the other side of the equation. Solve the equation when the variable is by itself.
- Perform the opposite operation to the get the variable by itself
For example, if the equation is x + 3 = 7, add -3 to x + 3 to cancel out the 3 on that side of the equation.
- Perform the same operation on the other side of the equation
Add -3 to the other side of the equation so the equation reads as x = 7 - 3.
- Solve the equation
Simplify the equation to x = 4 to solve it.
