How do you solve two-step equations?

A two-step equation is an algebraic problem that takes two steps to solve for a missing number, which is often indicated as "n" (for number), "x" or "y."
Isolate the variable
Restate the equation with the variable isolated on one side. If 2x + 4 = 8, move 4 to the other side by subtracting 4 from each side of the equation. The new equation is 2x = 8 - 4, or 2x = 4.
Remove the coefficient
The coefficient is the number multiplied by the variable. In this case, divide each side by 2. Thus, 2 / 2 = 1 and 4 / 2 = 2. The result is 1 (x) = 2
Solve for x
Remove the 1, and the answer is x = 2.
