What are transformations of exponential functions?

Transformations of exponential functions occur when the function changes to shift the graph to the left, right, up, down or in reverse. An exponential function can be reversed by adding a negative sign in front of the exponent.

Vertical shifts of a graphed exponential function occur when a number is added or subtracted from the original function. For example, adding a number to the function shifts the graph that many units upward. Likewise, subtracting a value from the original function shifts the graph that many units downward. Horizontal transformations occur when numbers are added or subtracted from the exponent in the function. The graph shifts to the left if the value of x is negative.
