The Legal Information Institute states that the 17th amendment allows for two senators per state and that each senator has a term of six years. Also, a senator is allowed only one vote.
The Legal Information Institute also states that the 17th amendment requires the electors in a state to have the qualifications of the electors of the most numerous branch within the state government. The 17th amendment also states that when a vacancy occurs in the senate, the executives must create writs of election to fill it. The state government can also allow executives to issue substitutes for any vacancies in the senate. These substitutes are in effect until an official senate member is elected.
