Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a convenient method of screening possible weight problems that is calculated by dividing mass in kilograms by the square of height in meters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses the same BMI standards for adult men and women.

BMI can also be calculated by dividing weight in pounds by the square of height in inches and multiplying the result by 703. The adult standards, which apply to individuals 20 years old and older, consider a person with a BMI above 25.0 to be overweight and a person with a BMI above 30.0 to be obese.
