Dan Blocker died in Los Angeles on May 13, 1972, of a pulmonary embolism that followed gall bladder surgery. He was 43 when he died.
He was famous for his portrayal of Hoss in "Bonanza," and the show's writers took an unprecedented step by addressing his death in the storyline of the show by having Hoss die in an accident. "Bonanza" only lasted another season without Dan Blocker, and it ended on 1973.
Blocker is buried in a family plot in the Woodsmen Cemetery in Texas, though he did not live there for much of his life. The grave site is marked with a plain stone that simply has "Blocker" engraved onto it.
