As of 2012, the medical school acceptance rate was at 43.8 percent nationwide. However, most applicants send applications to several schools, which may skew the data on medical school acceptance rates.
Given that in 2002 the number of medical school applicants was about 33,600 with an acceptance rate of 49 percent. As of 2012, the number of applicants had risen to about 45,000, bringing the acceptance rate down, accordingly.
The increased number of applicants has led to an increase in the GPA and MCAT scores required for acceptance into medical school. The average GPA of accepted students in 2012 was 3.68.
