All hospitals do not accept Medicare coverage, notes Senior Corps. Hospitals choose which insurance plans to accept, and they can opt out of Medicare program participation. In 2013, 6,164 hospitals were Part A providers enrolled with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid and accepted Medicare insurance, according to Statista.
In 2010, Mayo Clinic stopped accepting Medicare coverage at several facilities in Arizona, citing the low reimbursement rates as the reason, reports Bloomberg. As of 2015, though in-network for many insurance plans, Mayo Clinic and its hospitals throughout the United States do not accept Medicare assignment, as the facilities are non-participating providers, explains Mayo Clinic.
