The eligibility age to receive Medicare benefits is 65 in all states for most individuals. Some people qualify for benefits at a younger age if they are disabled, according to the American Association for Retired Persons.

Before receiving Medicare Part A hospital benefits, retirees must accrue enough work credits to qualify. Most people easily meet this qualification, although some people who stayed out of the workforce for much of their lives don't qualify. An individual in that situation can use her spouse's work credits to qualify as long as she is at least 65 years old and her spouse is at least 62, AARP notes.
