What are Medicare Remittance Advice Remark Codes used for?

Medicare Remittance Advice Remark Codes are used to provide information or additional explanations for adjustments noted with a Claim Adjustment Reason Code, states the Washington Publishing Company. Most Remittance Advice Remark Codes are supplemental.
The other type of Remittance Advice Remark Code is informational and always begin with the word "Alert," says the Washington Publishing Company. Alert Remittance Advice Remark Codes provide information about remittance processing rather than any specific adjustments or other codes. Each code corresponds to a specific message, as defined in the Remittance Advice Remark Code List. This list is updated in March, July and November of every year.
