What medications prevent seizures?

Carbamazepine, ethosuximide and felbamate are used to treat seizures, states WebMD. These are the generic names of the medicines Tegretol and Carbatrol, Zarontin and Felbatol. Doctors may prefer brand name medicines over the generic ones in certain cases.

Carbamazepine is the first choice for mixed and generalized tonic-clonic seizures, according to WebMD. Side effects of this medicine include rash, fatigue, nausea and vision changes. Ethosuximide treats absence seizures with the side effects of weight loss, nausea, decreased appetite and vomiting. Felbamate is only used when no other medicine is effective. Side effects include headache, inability to sleep, loss of appetite and depression with the rare occurrence of liver or bone marrow failure.
